Brief Introduction
The Laboratory is among the earliest key laboratories established by the Ministry of Environmental Protection. It mainly carries out researches on biosafety of genetically modified organisms, prevention and control of alien invasive species, and biodiversity protection.
Research Directions: to be a main technical support unit for the Ministry of Environmental Protection on biosafety management, biodiversity conservation and nature reserve supervision, and a national innovation base of environmental sciences and technologies.

Research Facilities
The Laboratory has a total area of 1016 m² including 418 m² of office area and 598 m² of experimental area. It has a field experimental base with an area of 7 ha in Xuzhou of Jiangsu Province and Anyang of Henan Province for field researches on genetically modified soybean and cotton. It has also set up the East China Monitoring Base of the national GMO environmental safety monitoring technical platform, as well as a national biodiversity monitoring demonstration base located in Yancheng of Jiangsu Province and Wuyi Mountains of Fujian Province. The laboratory is equipped with more than 60 sets of instruments for biosafety research and biodiversity monitoring.

Cooperation and Exchange
The Laboratory carries out academic exchanges, training and project cooperation with institutions in EU, US, Canada, Germany, Norway, UNEP, IUCN, etc. There are more than 10 visits paid by the experts of the Laboratory to foreign countries every year. Moreover, it has also maintained good relationship and cooperation with Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Peking University, Nanjing University and other relevant academic research institutions. It has also hosted the first to the fifth International Workshop on Biosafety.
